Following the considerable excitement generated by their initial two self-published singles, art-rockers EMPTY POOLS are set to unleash their first physical release on September 10th, as part of new label Battle’s 7”/digital series. The intertwining guitar lines, rumbling bass and crisp, pounding drums of Safety School combine well to create the complex sonic backdrop which has become something of a trademark, as well as showcasing the more emotive side of the Bristol four-piece. Leah Pritchard’s vocal takes centre stage here; stirring and delicate in the chorus, it culminates in a succession of luscious oohs which provide a rousing end to another impressive track.

Absentees, meanwhile, is all jagged harmonics and raw, scratchy riffs, and the throbbing drumbeat imbues it with an enthralling sense of perpetual motion. It’s rock that’s complicated as well as enjoyable, and is further evidence that Empty Pools are making more of a splash than their name would appear to allow. Listen below.
