Guy Fawkes night in Lewes is a BIG deal and represents a small town sticking two burning fingers up at the rest of the country one night every year as it unmercifully pisses over everyone elses bonfire. Processions of bonfire societies march the medieval streets in costume carrying burning crosses representing martyred protestants burnt at the stake in the sixteenth century by Catholics for their beliefs. In addition to the customary Fawkes effigy, the pope also makes an annual appearance on the flames as well various topical figures – most famously Osama Bin Laden in 2003. Basically its a lot of fire and angry locals aiming fireworks at hording tourists.
